When it comes to Nazi leaders, Adolf Hitler is known as the worst of them all. At first, he wanted to be an artist, but he was rejected by the school he wanted to attend. After a while, Germany needed a leader, and Adolf took charge. His mustache came from his favorite actor, Charlie Chaplin. He was a great speaker that also had skill at making symbols, which helped him make the swastika. His skill at speaking caused him to be the Fuhrer of a movement containing 3,000 people. He enhanced his personal power by making groups that kept order at his meetings and broke the meetings of his enemies. These turned into storm troopers controlled by Captain Ernst Röhm and Hitler’s bodyguard, the Schutzstaffel. He focused his doctrine against The Treaty of Versailles, the "November criminals", the Marxists, and the internal enemy number, the Jew. He said that the Jews were responsible for all of Germany's problems. His program, based on work by Gottfried Feder, was released in 1920. It outlawed Jews from the Volk community. It also publicized the myth of Aryan race supremacy and put extreme nationalism into effect. In 1923, he was arrested and put in prison for a sentence of five years but was released after only nine months. He was not completely in power at this time. He led about 3,000 people. His movement had fallen apart in his absence. After his incident, he changed from an adventurer to a political tactician. He decided to not face a gun again until he had that gun under his control. When Hitler gained some control, he made conservatives practically powerless. He also abolished the free trade unions, eliminated the communists, Social Democrats, and Jews from any role in political life, and swept opponents into concentration camps. In 1933, he secured his power with persuasion, propaganda, terror, and intimidation. He was obviously the dictator of the Third Reich after he destroyed the SA leadership under Ernst Röhm. The death of the President of Germany brought the combining of Chancellor and Fuhrer, which gave Hitler even more power. In 1935, he abandoned The Treaty of Versailles and started to build an army much larger than Germany was allowed. He convinced Great Britain to allow him to make a larger navy building program. In 1936, he went to Rhineland, met no opposition, and occupied it. In 1939, he sent supplies to Spain, which allowed it to get it to get a fascist victory. In the same year he started to build up the Luftwaffe. His expansion plans made people forget about the laws against Jews and such. Adolf's next target was Poland, which had guaranteed freedom from Britain and France. However, he wanted to avoid a war with two countries. He solved this by making and alliance with Soviet Russia, which obviously did not last. One of his most important decisions was attacking Russia. He thought it would cow Britain into submission. In 1941, he went all out in trying to kill the Jews. He thought that anytime people disagreed with him, they were influenced by Jews. Britain's refusal of his propositions caused him to consider territorial conquest as genocide. He made a big mistake in the conquest of Russia. He thought they were defeated, but they were not because they had such fighting spirit and a surprising amount of military resources. He announced them defeated too early and doomed his army to the winter of Russia. The winter had eliminated the mobile warfare that had been so successful in the previous battles. His key commanders requested retreats, but he simply released them from service. This caused him to have complete control over the army. When he took control, he listened to no advice. He ignored key factors such as the Mediterranean theater and the Middle East, the failure of the Italians, the United States entering the war, and the stubbornness of the Russians. This caused him to stop the conquest and begin a defensive war. He refused to accept defeat and thought that determination would counteract lack of supplies, men, and good strategy. He decided that his council and remaining generals were weak. He eventually made few public appearances because his health lessened because he was given medicine that did not work.
