He was a physician that performed truculent experimentation. He did these experiments at Auschwitz. At first, he was an assistant to Dr. Otmar von Verschuer, who was a leader in research on twins. He became a Nazi in 1937. A year later he joined the SS. While working at Auschwitz, he was one of 30 doctors. He was also not the highest doctor there. He was under Dr. Eduard Wirths. The doctors would select which prisoners would be tested and which would be immediately gassed. He was so cruel that he is remembered for his selections often. He did not select any more than his fellow doctors, but he was one of the coldest and cruelest doctors. Even when he was not selecting people, he was still looking at the new arrivals. Due to previous experience with twins, it is believed that we was looking for them. He would use twins to try to find the ancestral origins of diseases. Before working in the concentration camp, Mengele had done experiments that were not like the ones he did to make him famous. However, he got to the camp and had free rein to seriously injure and kill his subjects. He used this conduct lethal experiments on mostly twins that were usually children. He was also fascinated with heterochromia. While he was at the camp he collected the eyes of his victims for research material. He also ressearched in artificial eye color alteration. He believed that many things were wrong with Jews and Gypsies because they had a shortage of resistance. He used subordinates to carry out the lower tasks that dealt with dead bodies. After the war, he worked as a farmhand to escape people that wanted him in custody. He stayed away from his captors for 34 years. He died in Brazil from a stroke that made him drown.
